It seems that if Anthony Richardson is going to redefine his status as an NFL Draft prospect, it won’t be with the Colts.
Reports indicate that the Colts have allowed Richardson to explore trade opportunities, which is interesting given the current lack of clarity in their quarterback lineup. Daniel Jones, who took over for Richardson last season, is recovering from a torn Achilles tendon and is moving toward free agency.
Drafted as the No. 4 overall pick and the third quarterback in the 2023 NFL Draft, Richardson was noted for his unique blend of size and athleticism during his time as a starter at Florida. However, many believed that refining his skills would require some time.
Instead of developing, Richardson was benched in favor of veteran Joe Flacco after starting only 10 games early in his second season. This sparked questions about his work ethic and leadership qualities—he even requested to sit out a game due to fatigue.
The Colts went on to sign Jones, who had been released by the Giants, to compete for the position with Richardson.
Jones ultimately secured the starting job easily, and Richardson’s season was cut short when he injured his orbital bone in an unexpected pregame incident. While Jones was sidelined, the Colts struggled, even pulling 44-year-old Philip Rivers out of retirement, trying to keep their playoff aspirations alive.
At just 23, Richardson might draw inspiration from quarterbacks like Sam Darnold, Baker Mayfield, and Geno Smith, who found their footing later in their careers after rough starts.
Colts general manager Chris Ballard mentioned earlier this week at the NFL combine, “I wouldn’t say he needs a complete restart. Anthony is still young. He’s still developing, so we’ll see what the future holds. I still believe in Anthony.” His perspective seems to hint at the possibility of a trade, especially since Richardson is available.
Last season, Richardson only attempted two passes, finishing with a completion rate of 50.6 percent. He amassed 2,400 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions over 17 games, along with rushing for 634 yards and 10 touchdowns, showcasing his physical capabilities.
Ballard added, “I see a future for Richardson. You never know what’s going to happen. Things change.” Meanwhile, the Colts are likely to re-sign Jones or place him under the franchise tag to secure a starting position.
