Vance Critiques Democrats’ Silence on Victims During Trump’s Address

On Thursday, Vice President J.D. Vance criticized Democrats for their inaction in supporting victims of notable violent crimes during President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address.

As Trump acknowledged Dalila Coleman—a 6-year-old who suffered a traumatic brain injury from a car crash caused by an undocumented immigrant—and Irina Zalutka, who lost her life in a train incident in North Carolina, many Democrats just stayed seated. Vance expressed disappointment, arguing that the party should have put aside their opposition to Trump to honor these victims and their families.

“Watching their reactions to what he said made me think: these people are a bit crazy. This little girl suffered because of people who should not even be in this country,” Vance remarked. His comments included a questioning of who exactly is being allowed into the nation under President Biden and the Democratic Party. “You see this girl hugging her father, so excited—it’s just heartwarming,” he noted, but then contrasted it with the visible discontent among Democrats, remarking, “You can’t even clap for a 6-year-old who survived an attack by illegal immigrants?”

Vance pressed the question of what kind of party would not stand and cheer for an innocent child demonstrating the resilience of the nation. He also mocked Democrats for their lack of support for prioritizing American citizens over undocumented immigrants.

He challenged them further, saying, “What kind of party can’t do that? Are we really not going to stand up for a young girl who survived an attack?”

Meanwhile, as Trump highlighted victims, including the mother of a woman murdered by a repeat offender, he noted that the man shouldn’t have been on the streets after being released from prison multiple times. Vance also called out the Democratic leadership for the circumstances surrounding these crimes.

In response, some Democratic officials acknowledged their positions during Trump’s speech, while others, like Democratic Representatives Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, condemned Trump’s stance on immigration, asserting the need to remind him of those who had lost their lives due to government enforcement. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries instructed his caucus to either maintain their “silent defiance” or skip speeches altogether.
