Kim Yo-jong’s Public Appearance and New Role
Kim Jong Un’s sister, Kim Yo-jong, has made her first public appearance since reports surfaced that her teenage niece is being groomed to take over leadership in North Korea. This came during a ceremony where Kim Jong Un was given a consolation promotion.
Attending the week-long 9th congress of the ruling Workers’ Party in Pyongyang alongside her brother, Kim Yo-jong was appointed as the head of the party, as reported by state media KCNA.
South Korean outlets indicated that Yo-jong, who previously served as the party’s deputy director, is now expected to oversee the national propaganda department. This role will involve managing inter-Korean relations and foreign policy strategies.
Kim Yo-jong has long been a significant figure in North Korean politics and military affairs, having supported her brother since he rose to power after their father’s death in 2011.
Ahn Chang-il, a North Korean defector and academic, pointed out that this promotion is crucial for maintaining Kim Jong Un’s control over key government sectors while ensuring his sister’s safety. “Kim Yo-jong is one of the rare individuals Kim Jong Un trusts and counts on,” Chan-il noted.
This advancement follows a report from South Korean intelligence mentioning that Kim Jong Un is preparing to formally designate his 13-year-old daughter, Kim Ju-ae, as his successor. According to Seoul News Agency, Ju-ae is the only child of the leader to have appeared publicly, and she’s been trained for future leadership.
There are speculations that her recent appearance in parliament might solidify her position as her father’s successor, though no confirmations of her attendance have surfaced yet.
The Kim family has a history of betrayal. When Kim Jong Un took charge in Pyongyang, he infamously targeted his uncle, Jang Seong-taek, accusing him of various political offenses. In 2013, Jang was sentenced to death by firing squad after being convicted.
