Alerts Issued in Camargo as Violence Escalates
A Mexican border city has warned its residents to limit travel and avoid venturing out at night due to a wave of terrorist attacks. These assaults involve cartel gunmen employing drones to drop explosives on police forces.
The incidents unfolded on Tuesday afternoon in Camargo, Tamaulipas, located just south of Rio Grande City, Texas. This surge in violence follows the death of notorious terrorist leader Ruben Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes. In response, state police had been conducting patrol operations aimed at restoring order in the area, according to local police officials.
As officers patrolled the countryside west of Camargo, armed cartel members began using drones to target them, dropping explosives. The officers were compelled to retreat in order to avoid being caught in the blasts. During the chaos, one officer sustained injuries and was airlifted to Reynosa for urgent medical attention, though his condition remains uncertain.
On the same day, minor skirmishes erupted between Tamaulipas state police and cartel gunmen, leading to various pursuits throughout the city. Cartel members also created roadblocks and set traps to hinder police movement, causing traffic disruptions.
In light of these developments, Camargo’s authorities have issued notices advising residents to remain indoors for their safety.
The violence in Camargo is part of a broader trend of escalating conflict in the northern state of Tamaulipas, notably after El Mencho’s death on Sunday. His group, the Cartel Jalisco New Generation, operates through a faction of the Gulf Cartel. This escalation follows the violent power struggles involving both cartels, which have been recognized as foreign terrorist organizations by the United States.
