US Evacuates Non-Emergency Staff from Israel Embassy
The US State Department confirmed on Friday that it has evacuated non-essential government employees and their families from its embassy in Israel due to growing security concerns linked to rising tensions with Iran.
The evacuation specifically impacts staff ranked as security officer and below, as indicated by a statement from the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem.
This move is seen as a sign that a collaborative military operation involving the US and Israel in Iran could be on the horizon. Reports suggest that, should conflict arise, Iran may retaliate by targeting U.S. and Israeli facilities with ballistic missiles.
As part of its announcement, the embassy referenced escalating security threats, including the potential for rocket fire. The message emphasized that the security situation within Israel, particularly in areas like Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, remains quite precarious.
The embassy cautioned that further travel restrictions might be implemented for U.S. government personnel and their families in certain regions of Israel, including the Old City of Jerusalem and the West Bank. The statement advised, “You may want to consider leaving Israel while commercial flights are available.”
U.S. Ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, recommended in an email that embassy staff leave the country by Friday, according to reports from the New York Times.
In his State of the Union address, President Donald Trump expressed a preference for a diplomatic resolution with Iran over military action, but he also warned against the country acquiring nuclear weapons. He stated, “My hope is to resolve this issue through diplomacy, but one thing is certain: we will never allow the world’s largest sponsor of terrorism to possess nuclear weapons.”
Additionally, President Trump has directed an increased military presence in the Middle East and received updates from U.S. Central Command’s Commander, Brad Cooper, regarding Iran.
On the other hand, Iranian Brigadier General Abolfazl Shekarchi remarked, “We are not trying to start a war, but we are not afraid of war. We will vigorously defend the interests of our homeland and people.”
