Sen. Marsha Blackburn’s Proposed Bill on Immigration Crime Reporting
Senator Marsha Blackburn from Tennessee is putting forward a bill aimed at prompting states to monitor and publicly report crimes committed by undocumented immigrants. This initiative, named the Immigration Crime Reporting Act, intends to expand a current Tennessee law which mandates annual reporting of immigration-related crimes to the state’s General Assembly of District Attorneys.
Blackburn expressed her concerns, stating, “Joe Biden’s open borders have led to millions of illegal aliens entering our country. All Americans should know how many people in their communities have been charged with or convicted of a crime.” She emphasized that the proposed act would provide states with necessary resources to collect and share data on crimes linked to undocumented immigrants.
The proposed legislation would facilitate states in reporting immigration crime data to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and displaying this information on official government websites. In exchange for these efforts, states that engage in tracking such crimes would be eligible for federal grants.
Michael Huff, co-president of NumbersUSA, commented on the bill’s significance, noting that, “Violent crimes committed by illegal aliens are causing heartbreak and tragedy to our nation.” He pointed out the need for greater cooperation in enforcing laws, arguing that the media and some officials often overlook crimes committed by undocumented individuals. He believes the Immigration Crime Reporting Act would shed necessary light on these issues.
The Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) is also backing Blackburn’s legislation. Joe Chatham from FAIR criticized the current administration for allowing mass immigration, claiming it contributes to rising crime rates and negatively impacts many Americans. He views the Immigration Crime Reporting Act as crucial for understanding resource allocation and enforcing existing laws. He expressed hope for a quick passage in the Senate, praising Blackburn for prioritizing the safety of American citizens.
Currently, despite the growing national discourse on crimes involving undocumented immigrants, the federal government lacks a systematic approach for tracking these incidents across the nation. Blackburn’s bill aims to bring the United States in line with countries like Germany, Norway, and Finland, which have established methods for monitoring crimes committed by immigrants.
