Kevin Durant Criticizes Basketball Culture

NBA star Kevin Durant has voiced concerns regarding the way critics discuss American basketball culture. He suggests that these critiques often target black athletes while pretending to celebrate European player development. According to Durant, the underlying message reveals a frustration with the dominance of black athletes in the sport.

On “The Stephen A. Smith Show,” Stephen A. Smith echoed Durant’s sentiments, suggesting that globalization in basketball appears to be an attempt to “whiten” the game overall.

Durant expressed his frustration about ongoing debates, saying, “I don’t like the discussion of U.S. versus Europe. What I keep hearing is that, ‘AAU is ruining the game, and the Euros are doing it correctly, while America is failing.'” He added, “I see through this—it’s an indirect attack on black Americans. We dominate sports, and I think they are just fed up with it. Like, really? We just beat France,” he remarked.

In support of Durant’s perspective, Smith insisted, “He’s absolutely right. The financial aspects of globalizing sports play a huge role,” while also agreeing that the branding and glorification of the sport are part of the conversation.

However, Jason Whitlock, a host on Blaze TV, added another layer. In a discussion with Jay Skapinac on “Fearless,” Whitlock suggested that Smith’s comments implied that “white fans wouldn’t watch the NBA unless there were white European players.” He doesn’t believe that was the primary concern of fans.

Scapinac chimed in, stating, “Typically, those who play the race card are, in fact, the real racists.” He noted that while Durant brings up these comparisons, it’s somewhat of a contradiction because he’s the one framing this as a racial issue.
