Breaking News: Death of Iranian Leader
February 28, 2026 – 2:15 PM – President Donald Trump confirmed that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, referred to as “one of the most evil figures in history,” has been killed in a U.S.-Israeli operation in Tehran.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump characterized the event as “justice for the Iranian people,” commending “all the great Americans and citizens from various countries who have suffered at the hands of Khamenei and his ruthless followers.”
“Khamenei’s death is justice not just for Iran but for all those who have been harmed around the globe,” Trump stated, according to a tweet from the White House.
Trump noted, “He could not evade our sophisticated intelligence and tracking systems,” emphasizing the inevitability of the outcome for Khamenei and others involved.
He added, “This event may provide the Iranian people with their best chance to reclaim their homeland,” mentioning that many members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards and other security forces are reportedly reluctant to continue fighting and are looking for immunity.
In an earlier video message, Trump urged Iranian citizens to take control of their government after the bombing stops, saying, “You have the opportunity to make a change.”
Worrying for those in power, he warned the Revolutionary Guards and police forces that the U.S. would offer immunity for disarmament, or else face “certain death.”
He expressed hope that the Revolutionary Guards would peacefully collaborate with patriotic Iranians to restore the nation, indicating that the regime change should commence immediately in response to Khamenei’s death.
“The objective here is to overthrow the Iranian leader and several members of his government,” Trump explained. He affirmed that the airstrikes, which began around 1 a.m. ET, would persist as long as necessary to secure peace.
12:40 PM – Reports from Israeli officials confirmed Khamenei’s death during an attack described as part of “Operation Epic Fury,” a joint military endeavor with the U.S.
The 86-year-old Khamenei had ruled Iran for 35 years, marking him as one of the longest-serving authoritarian leaders globally. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu indicated there were “increasing signs” of Khamenei’s demise.
However, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei claimed he was “safe and sound,” contradicting the earlier assertions.
Trump called on Iranians, who have been protesting across the country, to “take control” of their government once the strikes conclude, but there are concerns that military action may escalate into the weekend.
Interestingly, some residents in Tehran reportedly began celebrating Khamenei’s death, despite ongoing uncertainty about his status.
This is a developing story. Stay tuned for updates.
