Pope Leo XIV issued a dire warning on Sunday about the implications of U.S. and Israeli military strikes on Iran, suggesting these actions could lead the Middle East into an “irreparable abyss.” He urged leaders to step back from the escalating violence.
During his Angelus address, the Pope voiced “deep concern” regarding recent events and emphasized the importance of choosing dialogue over conflict. He stated, “Stability and peace can only be built through rational, genuine, and responsible dialogue, not through mutual threats and weapons of destruction, suffering, and death.”
The Pope’s plea intensified as he highlighted the potential for widespread tragedy, urging those involved to take moral responsibility and prevent a spiral into irreversible violence.
This warning followed a joint military operation dubbed “Operation Epic Fury,” carried out by Israel and the United States on Saturday. Reports indicate that the strike resulted in the deaths of several high-ranking officials, including Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, who had led the Islamic Republic for over three decades.
On the same day, Iranian airstrikes reportedly killed at least eight Israelis, with missile attacks reaching close to Jerusalem.
Reinforcing his earlier statements, the Pope shared a two-part message on social media, expressing profound concern over the turmoil in the region. He reiterated that true stability and peace can only emerge from honest and responsible dialogue, avoiding threats or destructive means.
In a follow-up message, he cautioned about the “potential for tragic proportions” and implored all parties to act morally and halt the growing violence before it leads to irreversible consequences. The Pope concluded with a plea for the return of diplomacy and the protection of those yearning for a just and peaceful existence.
