Actress Jane Fonda, known for her progressive views, spoke out at a demonstration outside Los Angeles City Hall, criticizing President Donald Trump’s military actions in Iran. She labeled his decisions as reckless, insane, and an “uncalled for” declaration of war.
Fonda, often referred to as “Hanoi Jane,” drew parallels between Trump’s military interventions and the Vietnam War, which she famously opposed during her visits to support opposing forces in the 1960s.
She charged that Trump was waging an illegal war, prioritizing corporate interests over the welfare of individuals.
“What we are witnessing are the tragic repercussions of this unnecessary and unprovoked war initiated by the Trump administration, resulting in the deaths of numerous Iraqi schoolchildren due to bombings aimed at schools and civilian areas. Parents are now retrieving their children’s bodies from the debris,” Fonda stated.
She further accused Trump of contributing to American casualties.
“This reckless and irrational war against Iran not only breaches international laws, our Constitution, and the War Powers Act, but also holds the potential to escalate into a significant conflict that could result in numerous fatalities, including those of U.S. soldiers,” she claimed.
California’s Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom also criticized President Trump in a statement.
“The corrupt and oppressive Iranian regime should not possess nuclear weapons. Their leadership must resign,” he voiced before his critique of Trump. “However, that doesn’t give the president the right to launch an illegal and perilous war that jeopardizes the lives of American troops without a valid reason. President Trump lacks popularity domestically and is endangering Americans internationally.”
“As this situation continues, California stands with its Iranian American community, acknowledging their struggles and efforts to secure a more just future free from state oppression,” he said.
Newsom is pursuing a presidential nomination for the 2026 election within the Democratic Party.
