Pressure on airport security increases during DHS shutdown as unpaid TSA workers face hardships

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is grappling with underfunding, which has left numerous Transportation Security Administration (TSA) staff receiving only a fraction of their paychecks. This situation poses a real threat to their financial stability, especially if the shutdown continues.

A significant number of employees have gone without pay altogether. Deondre White, a Transportation Security Officer (TSO) at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Washington, D.C., shared his thoughts, indicating that morale among colleagues is “not the best.”

“We’re just trying to do our job, which is vital for TSA, but honestly, cost is our biggest worry,” he explained during an interview. Since being furloughed, White hasn’t seen a paycheck and can’t say when that might change.

Since the DHS shutdown began, more than 300 airport security employees have left the TSA, with officials noting that the rates of unscheduled absences have surged to around 6% during this period.

White mentioned that his family’s support has helped him stay afloat, at least for now, saying, “I’m thankful they can help me get to work, especially with rising gas prices.” But he also highlighted that many officers lack similar support systems.

Balancing work and family is a real challenge for many security personnel. White, originally from Pittsburgh, transitioned from banking to becoming a TSO in the Washington area.

“Most TSOs are really trying to manage financially,” he remarked. However, he added that the future remains uncertain and that he’s looking for some clarity.

“It feels deeply unfair to be in this position again without receiving the pay I deserve as a safety officer,” he expressed.

White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt weighed in on the DHS shutdown, criticizing the situation and stating, “It’s absurd that the American public is suffering due to the political maneuvering happening among Democrats on Capitol Hill.”

White raised concerns about how to handle bills without access to proper funds, saying, “Loans aren’t feasible for everyone, and going further into debt before the last shutdown? That’s just not wise.”

He implored government leaders to recognize the struggles of TSA employees, emphasizing their commitment while also highlighting their need for fair compensation. “We love what we do, but we need to be able to support our families,” he asserted.

White urged travelers to be patient amid lengthy security lines, assuring them, “When I’m at work, I’ll do my best as always. Our mission is critical, and we take it very seriously.”

Recent changes, like letting passengers keep their shoes on, along with the adoption of new technology, have contributed to quicker processing times at security. Yet, the challenges remain significant.
