Synagogue Incident Update

Update – 11:50am: Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard reported that the synagogue’s head security guard, whose identity hasn’t been disclosed, was struck by the suspect’s vehicle. Fortunately, he survived and is expected to recover after being hospitalized.

Bouchard mentioned that “something” ignited within the car following the crash, but it remains uncertain if there were any explosives aboard. He remarked that “the driver was driving with a purpose.”

The sheriff also noted that synagogues are well-equipped and trained for situations like this, citing that the FBI had conducted a target practice at the same temple earlier in January.

The suspect was killed during the incident, but his identity has not been revealed, and his body sustained “severe burns” during the event.

10:29am: Law enforcement is actively responding to a high-priority shooting situation at West Bloomfield Temple Israel. The incident reportedly began when a vehicle crashed into the building, followed by gunfire and a fire reported on-site.

Emergency crews were dispatched to the synagogue on Walnut Lake Road around 9:45 a.m. ET. Initial reports pointed to a vehicle colliding with the building, and an armed person was later seen in the area.

Officials from Oakland County confirmed they are assisting West Bloomfield police in handling the event, which has been officially labeled a shooting scene. Smoke was observed rising from the building, and firefighters were prepared to respond while police secured the vicinity.

In light of the escalating threat, multiple Jewish organizations in the West Bloomfield community and neighboring schools were placed on lockdown.

Witnesses reported significant police presence, including tactical units and armored vehicles. Residents are being advised to avoid the area to facilitate access for emergency services.

As of 10:20 a.m. PT, information about casualties and the suspect’s identity remained unknown. However, law enforcement officials indicated to reporters that the gunman had been killed. The intentions behind the vehicle crash — whether deliberate or accidental — are still not clear.

“We are responding to a serious incident at Temple Israel. This is a fluid and active investigation,” stated an Oakland County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson.
