On Thursday, two police officers from Pacific Gas & Electric Co. and one of their employees were shot in Camino, a foothill town situated about 80 miles from Placerville, California.
El Dorado County sheriff’s deputies were called to a residence on Mountain View Drive after a PG&E crew reported a shooting incident.
According to Jesse Dacanay, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office, deputies and SWAT members attempted to engage with the suspects barricaded inside the home.
After several hours on the scene, the deputies came under fire.
During the exchange, the suspected shooter was also fatally wounded.
Details about the PG&E crew’s size or the circumstances leading to the shooting of the worker have not been disclosed yet.
All individuals involved—the two deputies, the worker, and the shooter—were transported to the hospital.
The condition of the deputies has been described as stable, while information about the shooter’s status remains unclear. The union reported that PG&E crew members are recovering as well.
In a statement, Bob Dean, the Business Manager for IBEW Local 1245, expressed relief that fellow crew members were safe, calling the situation deeply troubling. He emphasized the dangers these workers face regularly, citing their necessary role in responding to power outages and other emergencies.
Dean noted that it’s unacceptable for these workers to fear violence in the line of duty, especially while helping their communities.
PG&E stated that their crews were on-site to replace a power pole when the incident occurred. They extended gratitude to the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office for their swift action in this situation.
