Virginia Man Arrested for Gun Theft Linked to ODU Shooting

A man in Virginia was taken into custody on Friday after allegedly stealing a gun from a vehicle and later selling it to Mohamed Jallow, making just a $100 profit. Jallow reportedly used that firearm during a shooting incident at Old Dominion University, according to authorities.

In court documents, Kenya Chapman, who is accused of illegally dealing weapons, showcased a $100 bill to investigators, suggesting it was part of the transaction. However, Chapman claimed she was unaware that Jarreau had previous felony convictions related to terrorism.

Chapman has been charged with unlawfully selling a .22 caliber Glock pistol to Jarreau. Following his arrest, which occurred a day after Jarreau fatally shot an ROTC leader and injured others on campus, Chapman told federal agents that the gun had been stolen from a parked car in Newport News last year.

The accused gun dealer stated he sold the weapon to Jarreau because Jarreau indicated he needed it for “protection” as a delivery driver, according to an affidavit from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Chapman, who was denied bail after his initial court appearance, had come under the scrutiny of federal authorities for several years. Documents indicate that he previously confessed to selling two firearms that were later recovered from a murder scene in Newport News in September 2021, used by both the victim and the shooter. He also provided a handgun to another individual who was arrested for public intoxication in June 2021.

Remarkably, despite acknowledging his involvement in “straw purchasing” these guns, Chapman faced minimal consequences at that time. Authorities had simply required him to write an apology letter, issuing a warning but not pursuing any felony charges against him.

Interestingly, Jarreau, a former Virginia National Guard member, was killed at the scene by courageous ROTC cadets who intervened after he shot a class instructor, according to law enforcement.

Chapman’s public defender, Michael Tagliabue, opted not to comment after the arrest.
