Mountain Biker Dies After Rattlesnake Bite in Irvine
A 25-year-old mountain biker in Irvine, California, passed away about a month after suffering a rattlesnake bite.
Julian Enrique Hernandez was bitten on February 1 while at the Quail Hill trailhead. After the incident, he was rushed to the hospital and admitted to intensive care, where he tragically died on March 4.
The Orange County Coroner’s Office stated that his official cause of death was due to an animal bite, as informed by Irvine Police Department Public Information Officer Kyle Aldorp. The bite resulted in a serious injury to Hernandez’s leg.
Aldorp mentioned that Hernandez was adjusting his shoes on his bike when he fell into some bushes and was bitten by the snake. His family is seeking more clarity on the events that led to his passing.
Dr. William Wu from Kaiser Permanente explained that fatalities from rattlesnake bites are quite uncommon, noting that antivenom is most effective if given shortly after a bite. Yet complications can also arise, depending on various factors such as a person’s age, health conditions, and the speed of treatment.
As stated by the California Poison Control System, rattlesnakes are indeed venomous, and even nearby individuals might not hear their characteristic rattles.
According to their website, rattlesnakes are often spotted on hiking trails and in rural parts of California. Each year, the California Poison Control System gets numerous reports of rattlesnake encounters, particularly between April and October when outdoor activities peak. Serious symptoms from such bites can occur rapidly.
The website emphasizes the urgency for victims to call 911 without delay after a bite. It also suggests that anyone bitten should try to stay calm, keep the affected area elevated, and seek immediate medical assistance.
“Rattlesnakes are to be respected from a distance; they bite only when they feel threatened,” the site highlights.
In reports, it was noted that Hernandez was in a coma prior to his passing.
Officials urge outdoor enthusiasts to stick to marked trails and to be cautious on warm days when the chances of encountering rattlesnakes increase.
