Trump Dismisses Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem
Recent developments see President Donald Trump parting ways with Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem. In her stead, he has put forth nominations for both Noem and Republican Senator Markwayne Mullin from Oklahoma.
In a letter addressed to Senators Peter Welch of Vermont and Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, Benjamin Yoho, a senior executive in a public relations firm, has called on Senate Democrats to apologize. He accuses them of exploiting his wife, a former high-ranking spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), to gain unearned contracts from DHS.
During the Thursday correspondence, Yoho challenged claims made by Senator Adam Schiff, a Democrat from California, regarding his firm, Media Strategy Group. Schiff had stated that the firm obtained $143 million in subcontracts, which Yoho argues isn’t accurate. He clarifies that while his company was indeed involved in DHS’s media operations, the revenue was far less than claimed. “We provided limited production services and received $226,137.17 for video and audio production, which constitutes about one-tenth of one percent of the total contract amount,” he noted.
Yoho pointed out that the contracts do not go straight to DHS. “Media Strategy Group was brought on by Safe America Media LLC as a subcontractor,” he explained, referring to another entity working with the agency.
His wife, Tricia McLaughlin, who was a former assistant secretary for public affairs at DHS, had recently retired. The couple’s association with the agency has drawn attention, especially after Noem faced queries from lawmakers regarding a notable $220 million advertising campaign she managed to promote DHS initiatives. Some Democrats believe a portion of that funding was funneled to individuals with connections to government agencies.
Yoho’s letter sought to correct the record. “This statement is factually incorrect, and I kindly request that my colleagues amend the public record and issue an apology,” he stated.
Noem’s dismissal followed Trump’s discontent with her remarks during a bicameral Judiciary Committee hearing, particularly concerning election matters. Reports suggest that Trump was “furious” with her performance and had objections to proposals concerning taxpayer-funded ads linked to her aides.
