On Friday morning, I tuned into a Department of Defense press conference about the Strait of Hormuz. A reporter sought clarity from the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. What was happening there? What might the future hold? How would it all play out?

General Dan Cain paused for a moment and articulated something that resonated deeply with me: the region is a “tactically complex environment.”

In these “tactically complex environments,” outcomes are rarely certain. Yet, maintaining clarity about one’s mission remains vital.

The military has a knack for summarizing complicated realities into a few soft phrases. Factors like geography, enemy capabilities, routes, alliances, timing, logistics, and unintended consequences all boil down to that one statement.

Unfortunately, “tactically complex environment” wasn’t the straightforward answer reporters were hoping for.

In these moments, our instinct is to search for certainty. We often wish for someone to lay out precisely how things will unfold.

But history tells us this desire for clarity is a luxury we typically don’t enjoy.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, most commercials began with: “In these uncertain times.”

I sometimes wondered, when were we ever truly certain about time?

War is inherently uncertain. Medicine comes with its share of risks. Markets fluctuate. Families face crises. Human experiences are rarely tidy narratives with guaranteed outcomes.

Still, we continue to chase certainty.

We seek it from our military leaders.

We ask it of our doctors.

It’s what we expect from politicians.

And to be honest, we often turn to God with the same plea.

The Bible recounts stories of those grappling with honest questions. The Psalms echo a recurring, painful inquiry: “Lord, how long?”

These questions arise not from skeptics, but from believers—those who trust God yet find themselves ensnared in circumstances they can’t fully grasp.

The Bible doesn’t shy away from this tension; instead, it exposes it.

Faith doesn’t erase complexity; it teaches us how to navigate it.

While the Bible assures us of the ultimate outcome of God’s plans, real-life situations seldom present clear previews of how they will progress. Today’s pain, confusion, and stress don’t simply vanish.

What the Bible consistently illustrates is a clear sense of purpose.

Love the Lord your God. Love your neighbor. Seek justice. Walk humbly. Remain faithful.

Even if circumstances diverge, these directives stay unequivocal.

Perhaps that’s why General Cain’s phrase, “tactically complex environment,” resonated so deeply with me.

Recognizing this reality doesn’t solve every problem, but it does play an important role. It recalibrates our expectations and reminds us that life is often more intricate than it appears. Once that realization sinks in, the relentless quest for certainty can begin to diminish.

Instead of insisting on guarantees that may be impossible to provide, we could redirect our focus. What is the mission?

In tactically complex settings, certainty about outcomes is scarce. However, clarity in mission remains essential.
