Conan O’Brien Pays Tribute to Martin Short at the 2026 Oscars

During the 2026 Oscars, Conan O’Brien took a moment to honor his friend, Martin Short, who is reeling from the recent death of his daughter.

After the film “One Battle After Another” was named Best Picture, O’Brien wrapped up the 98th Academy Awards with a heartfelt shout-out to the audience at the Dolby Theater, saying, “It’s been an hour of great fun.” He then added, “I love you, Martin Short! Goodnight!”

This touching moment followed a poignant “In Memoriam” segment that paid respect to notable figures like Rob Reiner, Diane Keaton, and Catherine O’Hara.

Martin Short has stepped back from comedy shows and industry events following the tragic loss of his only daughter, who passed away at the age of 42 on February 24th.

According to a death certificate from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, she died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The certificate confirmed that she was cremated.

In the wake of her death, a representative for Martin expressed, “It is with deep sadness that we confirm the passing of Katherine Hartley Short.” They mentioned that the family is devastated by their loss and is seeking privacy during this difficult time. “Catherine was loved by all and will be remembered for the light and joy she brought to the world,” they added.

The Los Angeles Fire Department confirmed they responded to a report of a shooting, finding a deceased female at Katherine’s Hollywood Hills home around 6:41 p.m.

Katherine, who had legally changed her name to Katherine Hartley in 2012, was reportedly found dead behind a locked bedroom door, with a note and a gun in the vicinity.

A close friend alerted authorities after not being able to reach her for 24 hours. Interestingly, neighbors mentioned that she never displayed signs of struggling with her mental health.

Martin Short and his late wife, Nancy Dolman, adopted Katherine, and he also has two sons, Oliver Patrick (39) and Henry Hayter (36).
