Centrists: We Need to Name Radical Threats
A person originally from Lebanon, whose brother was reportedly affiliated with the Iranian-backed group Hezbollah and was killed in an Israeli airstrike, seems to have brought the conflict home. This individual attempted to detonate a bomb at a synagogue in Michigan. Curiously, the media framed the story as if the brothers were merely innocent victims of Israeli actions. Despite three additional Islamist terrorist incidents happening that same week, it’s concerning how many struggle to recognize the reality of a global extremist movement that is, in a way, waging war against Western societies, Jewish communities, and liberal democracies. Ignoring this issue won’t make it vanish. A society that can’t identify its adversary, well, it can’t really safeguard itself either.
Libertarians: Self-Defense is Key
Some individuals at the scenes of recent attacks had the resolve and capability to intervene without waiting for police assistance, successfully preventing two terrorist attacks last Thursday. At Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Michigan, Ayman Ghazali drove a truck packed with incendiary devices into the synagogue but was confronted by security personnel. Tragically, he took his own life while trapped in the hallway after being shot. Similarly, ROTC students at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, managed to subdue Mohamed Baylor Jarrow, who had started firing on the class. With increasing political violence across the country, it might be wise to take personal safety more seriously; government authorities can’t always be the shield when danger strikes.
Left Coast Watch: Is Newsom to Blame for High Gas Prices?
The question arises: who is more responsible for soaring oil prices—Gavin Newsom or the liberal media? Under Newsom’s leadership, which he attributes to “Iranian price gouging,” gas prices in California have exceeded the national average by $1.80. Some are calling this “Newsom’s price gouging.” His anti-fossil fuel policies have led to a 40% decline in oil production and the shutdown of much of the state’s refining capacity. Now, his regulators are seemingly advocating for a significant increase in the state’s tax cap. This trend could make the nation increasingly reliant on foreign sources for jet fuel. Perhaps the media should start highlighting the potential risks involved.
Conservatives: Understanding Trump’s ‘Chaos’
If one looks past the apparent turmoil in President Trump’s foreign policy during his second term, there’s a discernible organizing principle. Scott Taylor suggests that Trump is strategically repositioning America’s geopolitical power with a focus on confronting China. He has been influencing new geopolitical landscapes from the Panama Canal to Greenland, Venezuela, and Iran. With Maduro being sidelined in Venezuela and Iran experiencing leadership upheaval, China likely has growing concerns about its future oil imports. Other maneuvers seem to unravel Chinese intentions to exploit U.S. vulnerabilities that threaten Taiwan’s defense. Although the liberal international order established post-1945 has dissipated, Trump appears determined to ensure that the U.S. shapes the next world order just as it did the previous one.
Liberals: Revamping the Democratic Party Image
The Democratic Party’s brand has become so negative that it’s hard to make inroads in many areas. Matt Yglesias pointed out that states like Nebraska and Montana could be nearly inaccessible for Democrats. Perhaps a brand overhaul is in order? Moves like those Trump made in 2016—shifting away from unpopular positions while focusing on more widely accepted issues—could rescue states that were once considered battlegrounds. Polls suggest that embracing merit-based pay for teachers, adopting a more open approach to fossil fuel production, and moderating on social issues could resonate well, along with reconsidering the use of race in college admissions. Ordinary Democrats seem to want strong advocates, but the goal of that advocacy should be winning. It might be time to reevaluate the constraints imposed by today’s progressive ideology.
