Pete Buttigieg, the former U.S. Secretary of Transportation, is set to discuss the upcoming 2026 midterm elections on “Saturday in America.” He aims to delve into the widening division within the Democratic Party, which is increasingly impacted by rising socialism, protests against ICE, and the detention of President Nicolas Maduro, among other topics.
In recent elections, Melissa Conyers Evrubin, Chicago’s Finance Secretary, was unable to secure a deep-blue House seat, despite heavy backing from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). This outcome is quite significant, symbolizing a setback for pro-Israel groups often involved in Democratic primaries.
Illinois state Rep. Rashaun Ford triumphed over numerous attack ads from the cryptocurrency sector, managing to garner support in the primary. He emphasized the backing of Congressman Danny Davis, who has represented the South Side and parts of the western suburbs for close to 30 years.
AIPAC and related organizations have invested upwards of $5 million to aid Conyers Evrubin’s campaign. In addition, the Chicago Democratic Party benefitted from support from the influential teachers’ union and the cryptocurrency industry.
Ford’s Republican challengers will likely encounter a tough road ahead in a district that leans heavily Democratic. In 2024, for instance, Kamala Harris secured over 80% of the votes in this predominantly Black district.
Previously, Conyers-Irvin had narrowly lost to Davis in the 2024 primary, but her campaign faced issues like accusations of misusing city funds and retaliating against whistleblowers, leading to the Chicago Democratic Party having to pay a $30,000 fine to the city’s Ethics Commission in 2025.
In the open race to succeed Davis, there were 11 other Democratic candidates in the running. Real estate developer Jason Friedman also faced a difficult path, despite some level of local support, as AIPAC’s super PAC targeted him with substantial attack ads.
Progressive activist Kina Collins and other left-leaning candidates seem to have split the votes among the party’s more progressive base, complicating matters further for anyone trying to challenge in this landscape.
AIPAC has taken part in Congressional elections for years, and its involvement in the 2026 primaries has shown mixed results. For example, in February, it succeeded in narrowly defeating former Congressman Tom Malinowski in a New Jersey special election, where a candidate with more critical views of Israel—Analilia Mejia—succeeded, supported by figures such as Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
The organization has also targeted other Illinois Democratic candidates who hold views that oppose Israeli policies, demonstrating its ongoing influence and strategies in shaping candidate landscapes.
Conyers Irvin has held the position of City of Chicago Treasurer since 2019 and has prior experience in the state Legislature. Throughout her time in office, Chicago has dealt with various financial difficulties, including a decline in its credit rating earlier this year due to a significant budget deficit.
