Funding Stalemate in Congress: Thune’s Accusations Against Democrats

Senate Minority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) has criticized Democrats for effectively stalling government operations during a critical time, claiming they are holding the government hostage amidst an unresolved funding dispute.

He pointed out, “They’ve taken hostage all of our government agencies, including the TSA and the Cyber Office, which oversees our nation’s cyber activities, and it’s concerning given the global threats, particularly from Iranian cyber operations.”

Thune made these remarks during a segment on “Special Report” to address the ongoing deadlock in Congress, which is primarily being influenced by Democrats regarding funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the proposed “SAVE America Act.”

As the partial shutdown of DHS continues, airports nationwide are experiencing significant disruptions, characterized by extensive wait times due to TSA agents not showing up for work.

He elaborated, “There are numerous DHS functions linked to spending bills that Democrats choose not to activate,” and added his confusion over how they can justify what he calls “defunding law enforcement.”

The Senate has begun to deliberate on the SAVE America Act, which mandates proof of citizenship for voting in federal elections.

Thune emphasized that this legislation is critical for ensuring secure elections, stating, “It’s about safe and secure elections, ensuring that only the right individuals, not those here illegally, have the opportunity to vote.”

In an interview with Fox News, Thune outlined the objectives of Republicans in the forthcoming discussions.

He remarked, “We aim to put them on record and have them defend their stances, especially given the public sentiment surrounding these issues.”

The SAVE America Act aligns with President Trump’s legislative agenda, as he has indicated that he won’t support any further legislation unless his demands are met.

Thune expressed confidence that voter identification legislation has widespread backing among voters across political affiliations, suggesting that the Democrats’ approach could present a political opportunity for Republicans.

He concluded, “This is a straightforward issue that I believe Democrats should ultimately agree with. If they choose not to, that’s a problem we need to address.” He also mentioned how it could play well for Republicans in the upcoming elections.

Amendments to the SAVE America Act are anticipated as part of the ongoing debates, as Thune has proposed a motion to cease discussion, which could lead to a final vote requiring 60 votes for passage.

Reiterating his commitment to voter identification as a priority, Thune stated, “This is crucial for the president. Many people across the country want this bill voted on, and we will ensure that it is brought to a vote, allowing everyone to see where they stand.”
