Homewood Mountain Resort in Tahoe closes ski season ahead of schedule

A ski resort at Lake Tahoe has decided to close its season earlier than expected, thanks to the unseasonably warm weather that has left it without much snow.

Homewood Mountain Resort announced that it stopped operations on March 17, a few days ahead of its planned closure on March 22, as reported by SF Gate.

The season was already short, kicking off just three months ago in late December due to a late start in snowfall.

By mid-March, temperatures had climbed, making it tough to continue skiing, according to newspaper reports.

Last winter, the West Shore resort remained closed amid ongoing discussions about its future. An early closure this year adds more uncertainty for the facility.

One of the main points of contention has been a proposal to convert Homewood into a private, members-only ski area. This plan has been met with pushback from the local community, who want it to stay accessible to everyone.

The early ending to the season poses further challenges. The resort shared on its website, “It’s been a season of ups and downs—major snowstorms and heavy rain, but high temperatures and low precipitation have forced us to change our closing date. Thank you to everyone who celebrated this season with us.”
