Kevin Kiley Loses Committee Roles After Departing from the GOP

California Congressman Kevin Kiley has been removed from all his committee assignments following his departure from the Republican Party, as announced by the House Clerk.

In a post on X, the House Press Gallery shared that the Clerk “read a letter” from Rep. Tim Walberg (R-Mich.), who heads the House Education and Labor Committee, addressed to House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana). This was also echoed by Congressman Sam Graves (R-Missouri), the Chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, and Representative Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), the Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee.

The communication was conveyed through House Republican Conference Chair Lisa McClain.

The committee chairs stated that Kiley’s “membership of these committees” was rescinded “in accordance with Rule 10, Clause 5B”.

“The Clerk also read letters from Committee Chairs @RepWalberg (Education and Workforce), @RepSamGraves (Transportation and Infrastructure), and @Jim_Jordan (Judiciary) to @SpeakerJohnson indicating that @RepKiley’s committee affiliation has been automatically revoked pursuant to Rule 10, Section 5B,” the House Press Gallery noted.

According to Congress.Gov, “A member’s committee assignments are also conditional on continued membership within the party. If a member switches parties or opts to become independent, their existing committee assignments are automatically nullified according to House Rule X, Section 5(b)(1).”

In another post on X, NOTUS reporter Daniela Diaz mentioned that Kiley casually told reporters that “once you leave the party, your committee membership automatically ends.”

“I must be re-elected as an independent,” Kiley remarked.

Breitbart News’ Jasmine Jordan reported earlier in March that Kiley had declared his intention to run for re-election in California without any party affiliation.

Kiley clarified that this shift means “there will be no party affiliation on the ballot or in office.”

“As an elected official, I’ve always seen my role as an independent voice for the community, holding politicians in Sacramento and Washington accountable,” Kiley added.
