Midterm Elections Present Challenge for Republicans
Harry Enten, a CNN analyst, has spoken out about the upcoming midterm elections, suggesting that Republicans are facing a difficult road ahead.
In a recent discussion, Enten noted a considerable drop in public sentiment regarding the cost of living. The shift has been quite stark—from before the 2024 election to now, in March 2026.
“You can’t win when the cost of living is 41 points below water.”
In October 2024, President Donald Trump had a slight positive rating of 3 points regarding the cost of living. Fast forward to now, and that number has plummeted to a staggering 41-point negative rating, marking what Enten describes as an unprecedented low.
“This is probably the most troubling sign I’ve ever seen for the president and the Republican Party,” he remarked.
Enten elaborated on how independent voters—often seen as pivotal in elections—are particularly troubled. In 2024, Trump had an 11-point net positive rating among these voters, but it now stands at a daunting net negative of 60 points due to the cost of living issue, a shift of 71 points.
“Dear friends, this spells out another political nightmare for the Republican Party as we approach the midterms,” he added.
The cost of living is foremost in voters’ minds, with 39% now citing it as their top concern, up from 38% in 2024.
“Simply put, if you are the incumbent party and your primary issue is the cost of living, you are unlikely to win elections,” Enten emphasized.
He made an analogy to Greg Louganis, the celebrated diver, highlighting the gravity of the situation.
Enten also pointed out that prediction markets had forecasted inflation levels would likely worsen, which doesn’t bode well for the Republican Party.
