Venezuela Claims First WBC Title with Dramatic Win Over USA
In a landmark match on Tuesday, Venezuela triumphed over Team USA, clinching a 3-2 victory in the World Baseball Classic (WBC) finals. This victory marked Venezuela’s first WBC title, filling the field with emotions as players celebrated the historic achievement.
Viewership numbers for the finals were also noteworthy. A record-setting 10.784 million people tuned in to watch the game on FOX and FOX Deportes, making it the most-watched WBC broadcast ever.
During the telecast, the average viewership was 10.228 million, peaking at 12.148 million between 10:30 and 10:45 p.m. ET. This was a remarkable 128% increase compared to the 2023 WBC final, where a different showdown occurred between the United States and Japan.
While the excitement of the finals was palpable, the entire tournament had generated considerable buzz. Memorable moments, like the ovation for Ondrze Satria at the Tokyo Dome, resonated with fans worldwide. Viewers were captivated by various exciting stories throughout the tournament.
Despite Venezuela’s strong showing, it appeared at one point that Team USA might turn the tide. In the bottom of the eighth inning, Bryce Harper, after a somewhat quiet game, stepped up and hit a two-run homer during the peak viewing phase, shifting the momentum. However, Venezuela responded decisively. Eugenio Suarez ultimately drove in the winning run with a double to left-center field.
As the game concluded, Daniel Palencia secured the victory for Venezuela with a strikeout, further igniting the celebrations at Lawn Depot Park.
This final, alongside the entire tournament, has set a new standard in WBC history, showcasing the growing popularity of baseball internationally.
