Rep. Ogles Calls for Condemnation from American Muslim Leaders
Rep. Andy Ogles, a Republican from Tennessee, has penned an open letter urging American Muslim leaders to publicly denounce a series of recent violent incidents in the U.S. He suggests that their lack of response might “justify the concerns of millions of Americans” regarding Islam.
Ogles addressed his message specifically to “mosques, imams, and Islamic religious leaders across the United States.” In his letter, he pointed out that there have been four recent cases being investigated as potential acts of terrorism and criticized the absence of condemnation from any American mosques.
“To this day,” he stated, “zero American mosques have publicly condemned this pattern of Islamic bloodshed and disavowed the attackers. This silence justifies the concerns of millions of Americans that Islam necessitates such violence.”
He emphasized the need for more than 3,000 mosques in America to vocally reject these acts, stating, “I call on you to publicly and unequivocally condemn these specific attacks, to disavow the perpetrators, to reject religious justifications for terrorism, and to state clearly that killing innocent people and targeting places of worship have no place in Islam or in America.”
Among the incidents he highlighted were a mass shooting in Austin, Texas, an attempted bombing near Gracie Mansion in New York City, a shooting at Temple Israel Synagogue in Michigan, and a shooting at Old Dominion University in Virginia.
Ogles encouraged religious leaders to make their voices heard, urging them to “make a statement from your pulpit, post it online, and share it widely. America is watching. Your voice can isolate extremists, protect Americans, and protect peace.”
He expressed a willingness to engage in dialogue with those committed to this cause but also mentioned he would continue pursuing legislation if such dialogue is rejected. “Violent Islamists have no place in American culture, life, and civil government,” he asserted.
In a recent post, Ogles claimed that “Muslims do not belong in American society” and labeled the notion of pluralism as “a lie.”
