Officials in Los Angeles rescue 700 dogs and cats in what may be the biggest animal rescue effort in the history of the U.S.

On Friday, animal control officials in Los Angeles seized around 700 dogs and cats from a property in Lake Hughes, marking what might be the largest animal rescue operation in the United States.

According to Los Angeles County Animal Care and Control, the rescued animals included approximately 400 dogs and 300 cats.

This action came after a search warrant was executed due to violations of the Animal Welfare Act. The animals had been under the care of Christine DeAnda from Rock N’ Paws Animal Rescue, although their health conditions remain unclear.

Some of these animals will require medical attention, as stated by DACC.

“Veterinarians and medical staff are currently triaging the animals on-site. Those needing emergency care will be sent promptly to a veterinary hospital, while others will be taken to the DACC Animal Care Center for further assessment and care,” officials noted in a press release.

The operation involved the efforts of over 70 members of DACC.

DACC indicated that this incident represents the “largest number” of animals ever seized and likely the largest rescue operation of its kind in the country.

Given the surge in animal numbers, DACC acknowledged that resources would be strained, and they plan to open an additional animal shelter this Sunday to help manage the situation.

DACC collaborates with external animal organizations to find homes for adoptable rescued dogs and cats.

It’s uncertain if Christine DeAnda will face charges. The organization claims on its website to be “one of Southern California’s most caring pet adoption organizations.”

Attempts to reach DACC for further information were unsuccessful, as they cited an ongoing investigation.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office has stated that they have no details on the case.
