LA mother’s murderer receives life sentence after being released on early parole

California Man Sentenced to Life for Murder

A man from California, Darryl Lamar Collins, has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his girlfriend, Fatima Johnson. Johnson, a mother of six, was found dead in her Los Angeles apartment on July 4, 2021, nearly a year after Collins was released on parole for earlier offenses.

Collins, 55, was sentenced after prosecutors detailed how he had bound Johnson with shoelaces and duct tape, gagged her, and left her in a state that shocked her family when they discovered her. Authorities revealed that he also stole her belongings, including a Lexus and some jewelry, which he later pawned for drugs.

This brutal act happened just 364 days after his release for two prior murders from 1995, for which he had served 25 years—thanks to a law change in 2017 that allowed for earlier parole for young offenders. According to Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman, Collins has now effectively taken three lives, a reality that echoes through the community.

Before he was sentenced for Johnson’s murder, Collins had a grim history. He was convicted of carjacking and killing Derrick Reese in 1995 and then fatally shooting Thomas Weiss during a robbery attempt shortly after. He was originally given a 50-year sentence but was released early due to changes in parole laws.

Hochman expressed concern over the implications of releasing someone with Collins’ history, highlighting the potential dangers posed by premature releases. He suggested that if the laws had not changed, there might have been a different outcome, potentially preventing another tragic loss.

In light of Collins’ actions, recent controversies surrounding California’s parole decisions have intensified. There are calls for reviewing the laws and the decisions made by the parole board as Collins’ case illustrates the devastating impacts that such policies can have on communities.
