Former teacher and Texas Senate candidate James Talarico says undocumented immigrants were his 'most patriotic' students.

Talarico’s Statements on Undocumented Students Surprise Many

In a recent interview, James Talarico, a Texas Senate candidate and former teacher, expressed that some of his “most patriotic” students were undocumented immigrants. Reflecting on his time as a public school teacher in San Antonio, Talarico emphasized the dedication and love for America that these students displayed.

“Before diving into politics, I worked with many undocumented students in the west side of San Antonio, and honestly, they were often my most patriotic students,” he said. He believes these students possess a unique understanding of the American dream. “They grasp things about this country that, perhaps, those of us born here have overlooked,” Talarico added, insisting that America was meant to be a land of opportunity.

The 36-year-old rising star in the Democratic Party argued that these undocumented immigrants “believed in this country, even when it seemed like this country didn’t believe in them.” He voiced his opposition to President Trump’s immigration policies, labeling them as “immoral” and “unconscionable.”

Talarico elaborated, “It’s troubling to see the most powerful politician in our country causing fear among my former students and their families, who are simply trying to contribute positively to our society.” He continued, saying this treatment is unacceptable and must come to an end.

His remarks have caused a significant stir on social media, particularly among conservatives. One conservative influencer expressed a strong reaction, suggesting Talarico’s statements were likely aimed at affecting Texas parents’ opinions.

In response to Talarico, Republican Congressman Brandon Gill questioned whether Talarico cared more for recent immigrants than for long-standing Texas families. Conservative talk show host Steve Diese speculated that Talarico’s comments might boost his fundraising efforts, even compared to previous candidates like Beto O’Rourke.

On the other hand, Republican National Committee spokesman Zach Kraft criticized Talarico, saying there’s no way a candidate like him could represent Texas values, characterizing his remarks as a dismissal of genuine Texans’ perspectives.
