Many football aficionados argue that watching games at home is the best way to enjoy the sport, while others feel that the excitement of live games at the stadium is irreplaceable. Nevertheless, as interest in football grows, ticket prices have surged, leaving some fans feeling like they’re just throwing money away to see their favorite teams play.
Leigh Steinberg, a notable sports agent with over 300 professional athletes under his guidance, suggests that teams and owners need to take a more proactive approach to ticket distribution. He recently mentioned, “I think it would be wise to set aside, say, 10,000 seats for each game for working families and youth. This could help build the future fan base.” In his view, truly appreciating the game often requires experiencing it live.
With advancements in streaming technology, many fans now find it easier to catch games from home. Some folks might argue that investing in a top-tier NFL package makes more sense than attending games in person, given the escalating ticket costs. After all, there’s much more to consider than just the ticket price when planning to attend a live event.
An analysis of costs for a family of four attending an NFL game reveals some surprising insights. This study factored in primary and resale ticket costs, along with food, beverages, and parking. Certain family-friendly aspects were also examined, such as child admission policies at various stadiums.
The findings showed that Lincoln Financial Field, home of the Philadelphia Eagles, ranks as the priciest venue, costing a family over $2,100 for a game day. In contrast, MetLife Stadium, where the New York Jets play, offers the lowest costs at around $556. On average, families are spending approximately $1,339 across the league.
Steinberg acknowledges the principles of supply and demand critical to the NFL’s ticket pricing strategy. He points out that while some can afford exorbitant prices, for others, prices are falling. He has expressed hopes that the culture around ticket pricing may evolve to better balance affordability with demand.
“We have such excess demand that we can set ticket prices high,” he noted. Nonetheless, he advocates for long-term strategies that may require sacrifices from players and owners alike. “If that means slightly lowering player salaries to keep the sport viable, then maybe that’s something worth considering,” he added, reflecting on a time when an owner dismissed such notions.

Steinberg also shared insights about his life and struggles, which inspired him to write “Comeback: A Playbook for Turning Life’s Setbacks into Triumphs.” Despite establishing a successful career, he faced personal challenges, including alcoholism and financial difficulties, which he eventually overcame.
