Dario Scardapane Discusses Allegorical Themes in Upcoming Season of Daredevil
Dario Scardapane, the showrunner for the next season of Marvel’s Daredevil, recently revealed that the second season serves as an allegory for the dangers posed by tyrannical figures like Donald Trump, along with various agents, including those from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
According to Scardapane, this new season draws comparisons to historical dictators such as Nero from Rome, Chile’s Pinochet, and Spain’s Franco, as well as Trump himself.
He suggested that these leaders share a common path to power, stating, “They follow a script,” referencing the historical patterns of authoritarianism.
Scardapane highlighted specific scenes that reflect the actions of these tyrants. For instance, a moment where a villain, portrayed by Mayor Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio), kidnaps a woman on the street echoes the tactics of ICE, while also serving as a nod to Ryan Coogler’s film Fruitvale Station. “This illustrates how communities can be disenfranchised,” he noted.
He expressed the view that his show parallels reality, saying, “Things have entered a place of art imitating life,” while discussing his perspective on the series and its connections to Trump.
Marvel’s executive producer Sana Amanat concurred, asserting that the show reveals “wild” parallels to the current state of America under Trump, emphasizing that Marvel has a history of using authoritarian villains to address discrimination against marginalized groups.
Amanat also elaborated on the character of Daredevil, pointing out that he doesn’t fit the mold of traditional heroes like Captain America or Spider-Man. “He realizes he can wield power, becoming a symbol that can inspire a group,” she said. Ultimately, she believes the stories told by Marvel consistently highlight that true power lies with the people.
Daredevil: Born Again is set to debut on Netflix on March 24th.
