Rio de Janeiro Mayor Bans Pop Star After Controversy
On Saturday, Rio de Janeiro’s Mayor, Eduardo Cavaliere, banned pop artist Chapel Lawn from participating in city events following an incident involving a fan. A young girl was reportedly very upset after soccer player Jorginho accused the singer of sending security to threaten her because he smiled at the girl’s 11-year-old daughter. In response to the backlash, Roan insisted she didn’t “hate” the child and claimed the security guard acted independently.
“Without your fans, you would be nothing. And for them, she is not worthy of your affection,” Jorginho expressed in a message directed at Roan on his Instagram Story.
Jorginho elaborated on the situation, which unfolded at a hotel in São Paulo, where he was with his wife, Katherine Harding, and ex-girlfriend Jude Law, who share a daughter, Ada.
“Earlier today, I went through a very distressing situation with my family,” Jorginho stated. “My wife is in São Paulo, and my daughter was ecstatic to see an artist she really admires, even making a sign for him.”
He shared that by coincidence, they were staying at the same hotel as Roan. “While having breakfast, an artist walked by their table, and my daughter, like any excited child, recognized her and just wanted to confirm it was really her.”
Jorginho emphasized the worst part was that his daughter “didn’t even get close” to Roan. She merely walked past, confirmed it was her, smiled, and returned to her seat. “What happened next was completely disproportionate,” he said.
As they were eating, a large number of security guards approached them, speaking aggressively and claiming that the girl was “disrespecting” or “harassing” others. “Honestly, I’m not sure how simply walking by someone’s table is considered harassment,” he added.
The athlete noted that the security guard even threatened to file a complaint while his daughter cried at the table. “She was very upset,” he stated.
“After years of experiencing public exposure, I know the importance of respect and boundaries,” Jorginho remarked, insisting that this incident was anything but that. “It was just a kid looking up to someone,” he said, lamenting the treatment they received from those who should appreciate fans.
Jorginho ended his post by suggesting good luck to Roan, who viewed the incident as a “moment of reflection.” “No one should experience this, especially a child,” she remarked.
He wrote in all caps on social media that without fans, Roan is “nothing,” urging her followers to reconsider their affection for her.
The child involved was apparently Ada Law, although Jorginho didn’t name her directly.
On the other hand, Jorginho’s wife reposted his criticism of Roan on her Instagram story, sharing additional posts showing Ada’s excitement for an upcoming concert. However, she explained that after the incident, Ada decided she didn’t want to go to the show that night, so they opted for shopping and dinner instead.
Rio de Janeiro’s Mayor responded to Jorginho’s claims, stating publicly that while he is in charge, Roan would not perform in the city. He humorously referenced Shakira, remarking that she was welcome, while proclaiming that Jorginho’s daughter would be the guest of honor at a future event.
In the wake of the backlash, Roan defended herself in a video, distancing herself from the actions of the security guard, who, she said, thought the mother and daughter were “going to do something.” “I don’t hate kids,” she asserted, clarifying that she hadn’t noticed anyone approaching her.
She expressed disappointment at the assumption made about her, saying it was unfair to the security personnel who must have thought there were bad intentions without any evidence. “If this made you uncomfortable, I’m truly sorry,” she noted, reaching out to the mothers and children affected.
As the situation continued to unfold, Roan reflected on her upcoming performances, expressing gratitude to her fans, staff, and security.
In past occurrences, Roan had also voiced her frustrations about fans and paparazzi crossing boundaries.
