LaGuardia Plane Crash: A Close Call
According to aviation safety analyst David Soucy, it was “sheer luck” that the recent crash at LaGuardia Airport didn’t involve more fatalities. The incident occurred when an Air Canada jet collided with a fire truck, miraculously avoiding a direct hit on the vehicle’s fuel supply.
Soucy, a former FAA Safety Inspector, shared insights with CNN regarding the crash, which unfortunately claimed the lives of two pilots and left several passengers and crew members, along with two police officers, injured.
He noted that the aircraft struck the fire truck at its center, causing minimal damage to the plane. “If it had been just 40 feet closer or farther away, it would have hit the wing or the fuel cell,” he explained. “That could have resulted in a massive fire and, very likely, a much higher death toll,” he continued.
Soucy emphasized the tragic outcome for the two lives lost, but highlighted the fortunate circumstances that led to the reduced number of casualties. “It was sheer luck that the plane hit right in the middle of the fire truck,” he stated.
Details Surrounding the Incident
The crash unfolded around 11:45 PM on a Sunday, affecting a number of passengers and crew members. Reports indicate that the Port Authority fire truck had received clearance from air traffic control to cross the tarmac, although controllers later attempted to halt it as it headed toward another plane.
Video footage captured the plane making contact with the truck and being dragged partially onto the runway. More than 40 individuals were hospitalized after the event, but many have since been released, according to officials’ updates on Monday.
In a somber reflection, FAA Administrator Brian Bedford remarked that the two deceased pilots were “young men just beginning their careers.” One of the victims has been identified as Antwon Forrest, as reported by the Toronto Star citing family sources.
