Fetterman Critiques Colleagues Amid Government Shutdown
Senator John Fetterman (D-Pennsylvania) is once again stepping away from his party’s stance, voicing concerns about the current partial government shutdown.
Disagreements among lawmakers over funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have persisted since mid-February.
Fetterman has expressed his opposition to the shutdown, stating he won’t contribute to the “chaos” it inevitably brings. “I always refuse to vote to shut down the government, and I will never be part of this mess,” he remarked during an appearance on “America’s Newsroom.”
The senator mentioned that he frequently talks to Transportation Security Administration (TSA) workers, many of whom are struggling financially due to missed paychecks. TSA employees didn’t receive their initial full paycheck until early March, which has deeply affected their situations.
On the other side, Democrats are unwilling to endorse any funding for DHS unless it includes reforms to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Instead, they’re proposing targeted funding for specific departments within DHS, particularly TSA, a move that Republicans have dismissed.
Fetterman highlighted the challenges faced by TSA employees, noting their average salary is around $50,000. “They depend on their salary. Now they have to face the crowd even if they are not paid,” he added.
The shutdown has resulted in significant delays at airports nationwide, with long lines reported in cities like New York, New Jersey, Atlanta, and Houston.
Many TSA agents are now expressing their frustrations and some are even seeking temporary employment elsewhere due to the ongoing pay issues.
Fetterman urged for a swift resolution to the shutdown, emphasizing the impact on everyday Americans. “I just can’t imagine why anyone would want to keep doing this. Just like the last shutdown. It’s workers and it’s America,” he reflected.
In light of the issues at airports, President Trump has announced the deployment of ICE agents to help with reduced staffing.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated, “On Monday, ICE will be at the airport to support our amazing TSA agents who are continuing to do their jobs despite the fact that radical left-wing Democrats…are putting America at risk by withholding funds.” He also mentioned that ICE agents should work without masks, a point that has drawn some criticism during immigration-related searches.
