Texas Senate Primary Race Heats Up
In a recent development in the Texas Senate primary, Senator John Cornyn (R-Texas) has gained 18 new endorsements from Republicans across the state, bolstering his position in a competitive runoff against Attorney General Ken Paxton. This comes following a March primary where neither candidate reached the necessary 50% margin to secure the nomination, leading to a more contentious campaign.
Among Cornyn’s new supporters are notable figures like Texas Republican Reps. Randy Weber, Nathaniel Moran, and Roger Williams, along with influential state Rep. Matt Shaheen and former House Speaker Dade Phelan.
The race’s tension has escalated, with both candidates engaging in personal attacks. Republican strategists are particularly worried, as some see an opportunity for Democrats, especially state House candidate James Talarico, to flip the seat, a move that could impact the party’s grip on the Senate and further influence President Trump’s agenda.
Cornyn, who has held his Senate seat since 2002, expressed gratitude for the endorsements, stating, “I am honored to receive the support of so many longtime friends in Texas politics.” He emphasized his commitment to working collaboratively for the benefit of Texans, looking forward to continuing his service in the Senate.
To date, Cornyn boasts the backing of 30 prominent Texas Republican leaders and enjoys support from over 500 current and former Texas legislators. His endorsements extend beyond Texas, with backing from Senate Majority Leader John Thune and the National Republican Senatorial Committee, among others.
Weber praised Cornyn as a staunch advocate for the Texas energy sector, highlighting his efforts to sustain the oil and gas industry and facilitate America’s energy independence.
Shaheen, who faces his own Democratic challenge, stressed the critical nature of ensuring Cornyn’s nomination, warning that a loss could lead to significant setbacks for Republicans come November. He reiterated Cornyn’s track record of electoral success, arguing that a strong performance in the race would positively influence the party’s prospects.
On the other hand, Paxton claimed strong grassroots backing, recently attaining 13 new endorsements himself, bringing him to a total of 250 supporters from Texas. His list includes U.S. Reps. Lance Gooden and Troy Neals, as well as endorsements from Turning Point USA and the NRA Political Victory Fund.
Reflecting on his campaign’s momentum, Paxton asserted, “Texans are ready for change and ready to be represented by America First warriors.” He underscored his commitment as Attorney General and his intention to carry that ethos forward if elected to the Senate.
Interestingly, President Trump has yet to formally endorse either candidate, despite expressing admiration for both. His future support seems contingent on matters including the SAVE America Act, a significant proposal concerning voting integrity that is currently under Senate consideration.
While Cornyn previously co-sponsored an early version of the SAVE America Act, he has recently published an opinion piece emphasizing its importance over traditional Senate procedures like the filibuster. He urged his peers to act decisively to secure elections and uphold national integrity.
“Whether Republicans like it or not, the rules of the Senate will eventually change,” he remarked, suggesting a need for proactive measures against potential Democratic obstruction.
