GOP opponent of Lindsey Graham vows to transform NASCAR: 'South Carolina will rise again'

Sen. Lindsey Graham Faces Challenges from Opponents in South Carolina

In South Carolina, Senator Lindsey Graham (R) is now in the crosshairs of his opponents, who have made dismantling his political career a significant goal.

One of his challengers, Paul Dance, affiliated with the first Trump administration, is particularly determined to unseat Graham.

Dance recently posted a video during the recent Goodyear 400 at the historic Darlington Raceway, where he outlined part of his campaign platform.

If elected, Dance has promised to contact NASCAR as soon as possible to request that they reverse a rule established during the protests following George Floyd’s death. He stated, “On June 10, 2020, NASCAR banned the Confederate flag at races.” He continued, “As the next U.S. senator from South Carolina, my first call will be to NASCAR CEO Jim France. Sir, we want to raise the flag again at NASCAR, and we don’t care what Bubba Wallace thinks. South Carolina will rise again.”

NASCAR’s decision to ban the flag came just two days after Wallace, a prominent Black driver, called for its removal in response to Floyd’s death. NASCAR later issued a statement declaring that displaying the flag violates their commitment to inclusivity, emphasizing that “the display of the Confederate flag at all NASCAR events and facilities is prohibited.”

In a related incident, shortly after the ban, a rope resembling a noose was found in Wallace’s garage stall at Sonoma Raceway in California. The FBI later determined that the rope had been there since October 2019, concluding that no crime had been committed.

Dance’s political agenda centers around replacing Graham, highlighted by his campaign website, which prominently features the phrase “Fire Lindsey Graham” alongside imagery of himself and former President Trump. Other stances include a call to end endless wars and eliminate what he refers to as the “deep state.”

Dance is notably recognized for his role in Project 2025, a controversial document that critics argue aims to replace legal standards with right-wing ideologies. However, proponents declare it as a strategy for preparing a new conservative administration through policy and training.

Graham’s office has yet to respond to requests for comment regarding these developments. The South Carolina Republican primary is scheduled for June 9th.
