Pennsylvania Democrat calls for Fetterman to resign following Mullin vote

Opposition Grows Against Sen. John Fetterman Within His Party

Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman is encountering mounting criticism from fellow Democrats. This week, a House Democrat noted that Fetterman seems to relate better with Republican senators, while another has gone as far as to call for his resignation.

The discontent signals a rift between Fetterman and his progressive supporters, particularly as he diverges from party lines on significant matters. These include his stance on Israel, backing Homeland Security Secretary Mark Wayne Mullin, and discussions around voter identification documents. Once celebrated by the left, particularly for his alliance with socialist Senator Bernie Sanders, he is now under attack from within his own party.

“I’ve had more success working with members on the Republican side than with those in my own party,” said Rep. Chrissy Houlahan from Pennsylvania during a recent event, highlighting a contrast with Republican Senator David McCormick.

This remark garnered some laughter from the audience present. Houlahan critiqued the SAVE America Act, a Republican-initiated bill that involved voter ID stipulations and modifications to election regulations.

She encouraged attendees to reach out to their “office of choice in the Senate” to express their concerns regarding the bill, adding that while some form of identification isn’t unreasonable, “this bill is not acceptable.”

Fetterman did not provide a comment upon request, but he shared his support for Voter ID in a statement on March 17, indicating he would oppose the bill’s consideration. He expressed frustration with the incessant attacks on mail-in voting, calling for a halt to what he referred to as a “Christmas list.” Houlahan offered no additional remarks following her initial comments.

Meanwhile, last week, Rep. Brendan Boyle from Northeast Philadelphia intensified the internal party discord by advocating for Fetterman’s removal. While Boyle did not respond to requests for comment, he criticized Fetterman’s backing of Mullin’s confirmation.

“Senator Fetterman has shown once again why he is President Trump’s favorite Democrat,” Boyle’s statement read. “He needs to go.”

Rep. Pat Ryan from New York, also a military veteran and moderate, joined Boyle in his criticism, pointing out that Fetterman essentially supported Mullin’s nomination, which Ryan opposed. “If you needed further proof that Fetterman has completely abandoned his voters, here it is. Pennsylvanians deserve a senator who will actually fight for them,” Ryan stated.

Fetterman’s journey in politics has been quite a transformation. Initially a favorite among progressives, he was known for his forthright, unfiltered manner. In his role as lieutenant governor, he promoted the legalization of marijuana and advocated for criminal justice reforms, often aligning with the Democratic Socialist Bernie Sanders faction.

In reaction to the Pennsylvania Republicans including language in their 2020 budget bill forbidding the display of flags other than the National, Confederate, and POW/MIA flags at the Capitol, Fetterman humorously remarked, “It’s kind of flattering that they changed Pennsylvania law just for me.”

Recently, however, Fetterman referred to his party as governed by “TDS” (Trump Derangement Syndrome) and noted he would not label Republican opponents as “fascists” or make comparisons to the Third Reich. He mentioned a civil relationship he maintained with former Republican contender Dr. Mehmet Oz and defended his support for Mullin.

“In January, I asked the president to remove me from office,” Fetterman noted. “I approached my colleague and friend, Senator Mullin, with a truly generous heart. We need leadership at DHS. We must restart DHS. My ‘yes’ is rooted in my strong, committed, and constructive working relationship with Senator Mullin for the security of our country.”
