Memorial Day Weekend Protests Over ICE Facility in New Jersey
Homeland Security Secretary Mark Wayne Mullin voiced strong criticism against Senator Cory Booker (D.N.J.), Governor Mikie Sherrill, and other Democratic lawmakers following their attempts to access an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in New Jersey, which they claimed contains inhumane conditions. Mullin labeled their actions as a “political stunt.”
The former Republican senator took to social media, asserting that the requests were merely an effort by New Jersey sanctuary politicians to gain financial support. He remarked that the incident represented nothing more than a manipulation by those seeking to raise funds.
On the same day, clashes erupted between anti-ICE protesters and authorities outside the detention facility, where allegations of appalling living conditions for illegal immigrants were made. Reports indicated that Sherrill attempted to enter the facility but was denied access. Following this, she and other Democratic lawmakers, including Booker, expressed their frustrations with ICE and the facility on various platforms.
In response to the mounting criticisms, Mullin stated, “There is no hunger strike at Delaney Hall. There is no subprime condition.” He continued to challenge the motives of the lawmakers, questioning their dedication to addressing crime.
Critiquing Booker, Sherrill, and other New Jersey Democrats such as Senator Andy Kim and Representatives Rob Menendez and Nellie Pauw, Mullin remarked, “Dozens of New Jersey’s sanctuary politicians have chosen to spend Memorial Day weekend smearing ICE law enforcement. They should be thanking law enforcement for removing these murderers, pedophiles, rapists, and drug traffickers from their state.”
He asked rhetorically whether these politicians would be willing to welcome these alleged criminals into their own neighborhoods, urging them instead to work collaboratively on crime-related issues.
Sherrill expressed her discontent via social media, stating that she attempted to access Delaney Hall due to “heartbreaking” reports about its conditions but was rejected. This, she believed, raised further questions about transparency.
Meanwhile, Booker reaffirmed his commitment to revisiting an ICE facility, maintaining that the circumstances there are “horrible.” Menendez noted that he had “spent the night” at one location after a surprise visit, aimed at assessing the situation of a constituent potentially facing deportation.
During the Memorial Day weekend, events escalated as protesters tried to create a human chain outside Delaney Hall. Some demonstrators clashed with ICE officers and were detained. Reports mentioned that some protesters yelled at the officers while demanding the release of detainees.
In light of the rising tensions and public scrutiny, the Department of Homeland Security released a statement assuring that meals at the facility would be assessed by a certified dietitian, emphasizing that all detainees would receive adequate nutrition, water, and basic amenities. Furthermore, they noted that ICE’s standards surpass those of many U.S. prisons housing citizens.
Fox News Digital reached out to Sherrill, Booker, Kim, Menendez, and Pou for their perspectives on the matter.
