Sean Miller’s Late Game Decisions Criticized by Charles Barkley

Charles Barkley criticized Sean Miller for his choices during a pivotal moment that led to Texas’ elimination from March Madness. The Sweet 16 game against Purdue ended with a 79-77 loss, which Barkley attributed to Miller’s decision not to have standout rebounder Matas Vokietaitis on the court during the final play.

Barkley remarked on CBS that having Vokietaitis, who is a significant presence at 7 feet tall and second on the team with 7.1 rebounds per game, on the bench during that crucial moment was a mistake. “In that situation, you have to get a big guy in there. What did you save him for? You can’t give up offensive rebounds at that point,” he insisted.

Despite his praise for Miller as a coach, Barkley expressed disappointment, stating, “I love Sean Miller. He’s a great coach, but it’s terrible.” As the offseason approaches, Miller will likely reflect on whether his defensive strategy was adequate, a contributing factor for their defeat.

The match had tied at 77-77 courtesy of Daylene Swain’s three-point play just 11 seconds prior, prompting Purdue to regroup with a timeout for their last possession. Miller had removed Vokietaitis after he accrued four fouls, which might have been a turning point.

Even though they forced a shot miss from Purdue’s Braden Smith, Texas could not prevent forward Trey Kaufman-Len from making the decisive tip-in with 0.7 seconds left on the clock.

Miller expressed his hesitations about having Vokietaitis match up against Kaufman-Len due to potential fouls and a concern about missing overtime. But as Barkley pointed out, they might have benefited from going into extra time rather than avoiding potential fouls.

“We made stops, but they exploited our size for those offensive rebounds,” Miller explained post-game. “Our best chance was to compete on the boards against Purdue.”

This marked Miller’s first season with Texas, and while some late-game decisions might seem questionable, the team’s performance throughout the tournament has been noteworthy. They made a remarkable run, defeating several higher-seeded teams before falling just short against Purdue.

Purdue is set to face top-seeded Arizona next in the Elite Eight.
