Bruce Pearl Comments on Hubert Davis’s Firing from UNC
Bruce Pearl expressed his discomfort regarding Hubert Davis’s firing from the University of North Carolina. During TNT’s March Madness coverage, the former Auburn coach turned analyst shared his thoughts on the situation, noting a perceived lack of loyalty in coaching decisions today.
“Hearing that ‘Hubert Davis was fired at UNC’ really bothers me,” Pearl remarked. He highlighted Davis’s accomplishments and questioned the decision, especially considering the challenges faced by the team, like losing their standout player to injury. “That’s a big part of the reason I’m here—there’s simply no loyalty anymore,” he added.
Hubert Davis, 55, is a former player for the Tar Heels, with a collegiate career at UNC from 1988 to 1992. He began coaching at the university as an assistant in 2012 and became the head coach in 2021, leading the team to the national championship game in his first season, although they ultimately lost to the Kansas Jayhawks.
After missing the NCAA tournament in 2023, Davis’s team rebounded the following three years, even reaching the Sweet 16 in 2024. However, his fifth season ended on a disappointing note when the No. 6 seed Tar Heels fell 82-78 in overtime to No. 11 VCU without their key player, freshman Caleb Wilson.
The university announced a few days later that they had decided to let Davis go. Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham expressed gratitude for Davis’s contributions as a player, coach, and community leader, saying, “He helped create special memories that we will never forget.” Despite Davis’s positive influence, Cunningham stated the need for the program to move forward and perform at a more consistent elite level.
With a record of 125-54 over five seasons, Davis’s departure sparked varied reactions on social media. Some users criticized Pearl’s comments about loyalty in coaching, suggesting that performance should take precedence over personal ties. One user questioned whether coaching success should be measured by loyalty, while others pointed out that five years is a substantial period in the coaching landscape.
Following his resignation from Auburn in September 2025, Pearl has been making headlines as a commentator this season. He was succeeded by his son, Stephen, as head coach. Recently, UMBC criticized Pearl after he appeared to favor Miami (Ohio) in tournament discussions, indicating the complexity of loyalties and performances in college basketball.
