Sen. Cruz Talks Potential Democratic Control in Congress
Republican Senator Ted Cruz has expressed concerns that if Democrats reclaim the House majority in the upcoming midterm elections, President Donald Trump could face repeated impeachments.
In a recent interview, Cruz, a conservative figure and three-term senator from Texas, highlighted the legislative achievements made during Trump’s presidency. He believes that a Democratic majority in Congress would lead to efforts to undermine these accomplishments.
With Republicans holding narrow leads in both houses, they are currently battling challenges typical for governing parties in midterms, especially against a backdrop of inflation and dissatisfaction with ongoing issues, like the conflict with Iran and Trump’s approval ratings.
“This midterm election is going to be incredibly consequential,” Cruz stated, noting his own re-election plans aren’t up for this year, but he is looking toward 2024.
Cruz emphasized the stakes, declaring his commitment to securing victories and maintaining Republican control in both the House and Senate. He asserted that a Democratic takeover would stifle meaningful legislation and lead to relentless impeachments of Trump, driven merely by partisan dislike.
He specified that if Democrats regain control of the House, they would launch investigations against the Trump administration across various committees.
Cruz further elaborated that if the Senate falls into Democratic hands as well, it could halt the confirmation process for Trump’s Cabinet nominees. He suggested that Democrats might leave key positions unfilled rather than approve appointments.
Countering Cruz’s assertions, some Democrats, including Senate Campaign Chair Kirsten Gillibrand, argued that it is Trump’s policies that are detrimental and are propelling the need for Democratic leadership to guide people out of challenging circumstances.
Kendall Whitmer from the Democratic National Committee maintained that a Democratic Congress would stop Republicans from pursuing tax cuts for the wealthy and neglecting crucial services.
Cruz is set to return to Texas for an appearance at CPAC in Dallas, yet the recent cancellation of Iowa’s caucuses has sparked speculation about his future political ambitions. While he previously ran for president in 2016, he’s suggested his immediate focus will remain on the Senate.
In the interview, he pointed out his legislative achievements, claiming significant successes accomplished under Trump’s administration and vowing to maintain momentum for the benefit of Americans.
Cruz claimed credit for drafting impactful provisions, such as those related to tax exemptions and school choice, and expressed confidence that they would prove pivotal in the long run.
His focus continues to be on fostering results and expanding voter support for conservative measures, highlighting the importance of his legislative contributions that, he believes, will resonate far into the future.
