Student publication starts ICE tracker shortly after illegal immigrant is charged with Sheridan Gorman's murder

College Newspaper Launches ICE Tracker After Student Murder

A college newspaper near Chicago has initiated an ICE tracker, shortly after an undocumented immigrant was charged with the murder of Sheridan Gorman, an 18-year-old student from Loyola University.

The Dominican Star, the publication for Dominican University, announced this on Wednesday. They mentioned that they have drawn inspiration from the Loyola Phoenix, which had unveiled its own ICE tracker last fall.

“We were motivated by their efforts and decided to create a service to benefit our community,” the Dominican Star noted. They added that after discussions with editors from the Loyola Phoenix, they were able to gather additional information for this endeavor.

The newspaper elaborated that this tracker will feature a detailed map of areas where ICE activity has been reported. Furthermore, it will focus on neighborhoods around the Dominican community with significant high school populations.

In addition, the Dominican Star highlighted several areas they intend to monitor and encouraged readers to send in reports of any ICE activity they witness. This input will help update the map with corresponding markers.

As of now, the Dominican Star has not responded to requests for comments from various news outlets.

The Department of Homeland Security confirmed that the suspect in Gorman’s murder is Jose Medina-Medina, identified as a “Venezuelan criminal illegal alien.” He was apprehended by U.S. Border Patrol and entered the country in 2023 during the Biden administration.

Medina-Medina had previously been arrested for shoplifting and was released a month afterward.

In a related action, the Loyola Phoenix has retracted a social media headline referring to Medina-Medina as an “illegal immigrant” that gained attention due to the tragic crime.

On March 23, a post on their Instagram featured the headline: “Immigrant man charged with murder of Sheridan Gorman, DHS involved.” Following some backlash, the headline was swiftly removed as it didn’t accurately convey the article’s primary messages.
