Ukrainian President Seeks Defense Partnerships
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy is leveraging battlefield advancements to enhance Ukraine’s bargaining position, particularly by supplying anti-drone systems to Middle Eastern allies while requesting additional air defense support as the conflict with Russia continues into its fourth year.
During a meeting in Abu Dhabi with United Arab Emirates (UAE) President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Zelensky discussed a possible agreement for Ukraine to provide advanced anti-drone technology in return for ballistic missile support and financial aid.
In a recent interview, Zelensky shared insights on how Ukraine’s innovative warfare tactics, particularly its anti-Russian drone capabilities, are reshaping global defense collaborations.
“For example, we have drones and electronic warfare systems, among other tools—all operating cohesively. This is something unique that we possess,” he noted while speaking with a correspondent.
Currently, Ukraine collaborates with several Persian Gulf nations such as the UAE, Qatar, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia to combat the escalating drone threat posed by Iran.
However, he emphasized the need for these partnerships to benefit both sides, pointing out that Ukraine still faces a critical shortfall in vital air defense systems, especially the PAC-3 Patriot missile designed for intercepting ballistic threats.
“We’re ready to assist Middle Eastern countries with our knowledge and expertise, and we hope to gain support for anti-ballistic missiles in return,” President Zelensky indicated.
Ukraine has already established 10-year defense agreements with both Saudi Arabia and Qatar. A similar deal with the UAE is anticipated soon, based on reports.
Additionally, Zelensky raised concerns about the increased presence of U.S. forces in the Middle East potentially hindering the flow of military supplies to Ukraine, especially amidst the rising tensions involving Iran and ongoing operations.
He accused Russia of enhancing Iran’s military capabilities by sharing drone technology and combat strategies acquired during the ongoing war.
While he refrained from confirming any missile transfers, he hinted that Russia may aim to prolong instability in the Middle East to distract the U.S. from the situation in Ukraine.
“This is their approach,” he stated.
On the battlefield, Zelensky reiterated that Ukraine would not surrender territory in the contested Donbass region, asserting that this would undermine defenses, reduce troop morale, and displace many civilians.
“I think morale would drop,” he remarked.
He also urged the Trump administration to remain attentive to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine while addressing issues in the Middle East.
Recently, Ukrainian officials reported that over 270 Russian drones targeted Ukraine on a single night, resulting in the deaths of at least five individuals.
“I hope President Trump will pressure the Iranian regime to seek an end to this conflict. Also, I trust he won’t overlook the war between Russia and Ukraine,” Zelensky expressed.
