Migrant from India Taken into Custody After Driver Crashed Into Multiple People in Derby

Incident in Derby City Center

An Indian man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after allegedly driving his car into a pedestrian in Derby city center on Saturday night.

The British city of Derby experienced a shocking scene around 9:30 PM when a black Suzuki Swift rammed into a crowd on Flyergate, injuring at least seven individuals. Thankfully, all seven people sustained injuries that are not life-threatening.

Local police reported that a 36-year-old man from India, who has resided in the area for several years, was taken into custody on suspicion of attempted murder.

A witness described the scene as “absolute carnage,” stating it was “absolutely horrifying.” They mentioned seeing people lying on the pavement, some covered in blood.

Another person added, “Everyone was talking about it and panicking. We know people in nearby bars who thought it could have been them.” They expressed their sadness, saying, “Everyone is very upset. Some are crying. I can’t believe this happened.”

Concerns have arisen regarding potential terrorist motives in Europe due to the Iran conflict, although police have not confirmed if this incident was connected.

A police spokesperson stated, “Investigations into the circumstances of the incident are ongoing, and we remain vigilant regarding the motive.”

Chief Superintendent Emma Aldred reassured the community, noting that a dedicated team of detectives is actively working on the case. “Thanks to the swift actions of officers and public sightings, we quickly apprehended the suspect within minutes of the incident,” she mentioned.

Nadine Peatfield, leader of Derby City Council, expressed her horror at the incident, which injured several pedestrians. She extended her thoughts to the victims, their families, and those who witnessed the event.

She also thanked emergency services for their rapid response, emphasizing the importance of community safety. “We are working closely with Derbyshire Police to investigate,” she urged anyone with information to come forward.

UK Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson mentioned that the government is receiving updates from local police regarding the investigation. She conveyed her thoughts to those affected during this challenging time.
