A proposal on a cruise ship took an unexpected turn when an attendant prematurely announced the engagement, catching the couple completely off guard. According to reports, Amanda Bratton, 46, was having dinner with her boyfriend, Gary Bratton, 43, when a waiter loudly congratulated them, declaring, “Congratulations on your engagement!” This moment surprised Amanda, who hadn’t expected anything, as Gary had planned the proposal carefully.
Gary had bought a ring from the ship’s jeweler and intended to propose in a more private manner. He had arranged for the ring to be presented before asking the question, but things quickly deviated from his plan. The waitstaff began to celebrate, serenading the couple with a “Happy Engagement” song as they delivered a cake adorned with candles.
Amanda described the moment as both amusing and bewildering, saying, “I think the waitstaff tried to make it special, but Gary was definitely surprised.” Even as they celebrated with cake, Amanda awkwardly laughed, covering her face while other diners observed the scene unfold.
“I’m not engaged!” she exclaimed, though the Texas couple was ostensibly celebrating Amanda’s daughter’s birthday during the cruise. Gary’s idea for the proposal had revolved around Amanda’s fondness for cruises, making this trip a thoughtful choice.
While his original plan aimed for simplicity, it ended up being a bit of a spectacle. Just as Gary began to propose, he watched in disbelief as the unexpected celebration continued. Finally, after the noise settled, he got down on one knee, but Amanda humorously remarked, “Rather than being special and romantic, it was chaotic and everything was wrong.” In retrospect, she added, “We have the worst luck, and that will be tracked.”
