Dominic Smith Reflects on Loss and Triumph

Since the passing of his mother, Yvette LaFleur, on March 15 after her struggle with cancer, Dominic Smith feels her spirit with him every day.

During Saturday’s game, her memory was especially present. Smith, the Braves’ designated hitter, hit a walk-off grand slam in the ninth inning, leading Atlanta to a 6-2 victory over the Royals.

“Honestly, I’m trying not to cry right now,” Smith shared with reporters post-game. “I really feel her every single day. I miss her a lot. I think there’s not a moment that goes by when I’m not thinking about her. I truly appreciate this team; they’ve really supported me through everything I’m dealing with.”

At 30, Smith was vying for a position on the Braves’ roster in spring training. However, he spent over a week away from camp, a time marked by personal turmoil, as he missed being by his mother’s side in California when she passed.

He expressed gratitude for how the Braves have supported him through such a challenging period. “This team is fantastic,” he said. “I feel so blessed by the love and support they’ve shown me. They really cared about my mom and me, much more than just the game.”

After previously playing for the Mets, Smith made his first start for the Braves in their second game of the season, returning to the lineup for the following game as well, batting eighth as they aimed for a clean sweep to start the season.

Having faced the Braves as an opponent for years, Smith reflected, “It’s incredible. I’ve had some tough moments playing against them, but being on this side feels great and it’s just so much fun.”
