Claude Lemieux Passes Away Days After NHL Return

Claude Lemieux, a celebrated four-time Stanley Cup champion, has sadly died at the age of 60, as confirmed by the NHL’s alumni association. His death came just days after he made an appearance at Montreal’s Bell Center, a place that holds significant memories for him.

On Monday night, he participated in a memorable moment—he carried the torch during Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals, where the Canadiens faced off against the Hurricanes. Fans were ecstatic, capturing videos of him as he walked through a tunnel filled with cheering supporters. It was a proud moment for Lemieux, who passionately waved his fist as he entered the arena.

Tragically, reports indicate that his death was ruled a suicide. Lemieux was discovered early Thursday morning at a family business located in Florida.

A Quebec native, Lemieux had been drafted by the Canadiens back in 1983, kicking off his career in Montreal where he played for the first seven years. He clinched his first championship with the Canadiens in 1986 and later secured three more titles—two with the Devils and one with the Avalanche.

Canadiens owner Jeff Molson expressed his condolences, stating, “Today is a dark day for the Canadiens family and the entire hockey community. Our hearts go out to Claude’s family and loved ones.” He recalled Lemieux as a fierce competitor and a quintessential Canadiens player, emphasizing the profound loss felt across the community.

Throughout his career, Lemieux also played for teams like the Coyotes, Stars, and Sharks. He wrapped up his hockey journey for a second time at 43 in 2009, following a comeback season with San Jose.

In a strikingly close match, the Canadiens lost 2-3 in overtime, and just recently suffered a 0-4 setback in Game 4. As they prepare for Game 5 against the Hurricanes in Carolina, there’s a sense that, if they manage to push for a Game 6, it will be filled with rich emotional undertones at the Bell Center. The Canadiens last reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2021, but it’s been since 1993 since they last won a cup match.
