Embattled human rights leader posts mysterious message following arrest

Cheryl Davis Breaks Silence After Arrest

Cheryl Davis, a human rights activist from San Francisco, has finally spoken up following her recent arrest on several felony charges. She took to Instagram, sharing a somewhat vague message that seemed to be a call for support after her release on bail.

In her post, Davis shared an unfinished pastel drawing alongside the question: “Where are my encouraging and supportive sisters?” This cryptic request came shortly after her run-in with the law related to allegations of misusing taxpayer dollars intended for the city’s Black community.

Last Monday, she faced 17 felony charges and two misdemeanors, which include serious accusations like perjury and misappropriation of public funds. These charges stem from her time as chair of the San Francisco Human Rights Commission.

According to prosecutors, Davis and her partner, James Spingola, reportedly diverted funds from the Dream Keeper Initiative—a program established after George Floyd’s death to aid the Black community. Instead of using the money for its intended purposes, they allegedly spent it on personal events, family expenses, and other unrelated projects.

Davis was significantly involved in a contract worth over $3 million through Spingola’s nonprofit, Collective Impact. Notably, she ignored warnings from city appraisers who rated the organization poorly.

It is claimed that she funneled funds from the Dream Keeper project to cover a range of extravagant expenses such as VIP tickets, wine tours, concerts, and events in upscale locations like Beverly Hills, Martha’s Vineyard, and New York City. Additionally, money was directed toward several public relations firms to promote books and personal initiatives.

The allegations further include Davis arranging for her son to receive $140,000 through an affiliated nonprofit while using city funds for his tuition at UCLA.

Spingola has also been charged with four felonies for his role in the alleged misconduct. Interestingly, Davis’s recent artwork appears to tie into a project called “Little Girl Revival.”

Back in July of 2025, Davis mentioned feeling adrift after leaving a long-held job, expressing a sense of loss and defeat during a tough period in her life.
