Trump issues order on mail-in voting, asserts fraud has been 'historic'

Trump Signs Executive Order on Voting

President Donald Trump signed an extensive executive order on Tuesday, aiming to address mail-in voting and voter eligibility. He characterized this move as a crucial effort to rebuild trust in U.S. elections.

During remarks from the Oval Office, Trump emphasized that the order centers on “voter integrity and mail-in voting” and tackling what he called “massive fraud” occurring right now.

“We’re going to sign an executive order,” he stated confidently. “I think that’s foolproof… It’s pretty clear what’s being proposed.”

The directive instructs federal agencies to collaborate with states to compile voter lists utilizing federal citizenship and identity information. It also mandates that the U.S. Postal Service implement new protections for mail-in voting, including tracking systems and verification processes.

The Department of Homeland Security is tasked to work alongside the Social Security Administration and other federal databases to establish a “state citizenship list” which would include individuals who are at least 18 and identified as U.S. citizens in their respective states.

These lists are meant to be updated and shared with state officials ahead of federal elections.

Moreover, the attorney general is directed to prioritize investigations into any officials issuing ballots to those who aren’t eligible for federal voting and those engaged in the production and distribution of these ballots.

In terms of mail-in voting logistics, the executive order compels the Postmaster General to initiate rulemaking within 60 days. This would involve the introduction of tracking technology to ensure ballots are recognized as legitimate election mail and subject to evaluation by the Post Office.

States will also be able to inform the USPS when they plan to utilize mail-in or absentee voting, provide voters’ lists, and maintain records of ballot distribution.

Trump framed these adjustments as a response to perceived vulnerabilities in mail-in voting.

He expressed concerns about potential fraud, saying, “Mail-in voting fraud is legendary. It’s scary what’s going on.”

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick highlighted the administration’s goal: creating a system linking each ballot to a trackable envelope, ensuring transparency about what voters selected.

Trump is also mulling over additional voting requirements, such as voter ID and proof of citizenship. “We want to get voter ID, we want to get proof of citizenship… we’re working on that,” he remarked.

He claimed that resistance to these initiatives stemmed from political motivations, adding, “The only people you don’t want to create voter IDs are people who cheat.”

While acknowledging possible legal challenges to the order, Trump expressed confidence in its durability against opposition. “I don’t know how you can challenge it,” he noted. “You may find a corrupt judge… but that’s the only way it could change.”

The executive order asserts that voting in federal elections should be “limited to U.S. citizens only” and emphasizes the need for additional security to foster public trust in election outcomes, including ballot identifiers like barcodes.

Ultimately, Trump posed a broader question: “You can’t really have a nation without an honest vote.”
