Leading LA dancer falls during practice, requires emergency heart transplant

A well-known dancer from Los Angeles, Gubari Gilliam, was taken to the hospital after suffering cardiac arrest and is now in urgent need of a heart transplant, as stated by his family.

The 32-year-old collapsed during a rehearsal last week and was quickly transported to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

Upon examination, doctors identified a rare heart condition called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. A fundraiser has been established to help with his medical costs.

According to a message on the fundraising site, the hospital team has noted the severity of his condition, indicating that a heart transplant is crucial for his survival.

Until a suitable donor heart is found, Gilliam will need an artificial heart, which will entail various procedures, prolonged hospital stays, and an expensive transplant process.

His condition stems from thickened heart walls that hinder proper blood circulation. Interestingly, many individuals may have this condition without even realizing it. Friends and family have shared their admiration for Gilliam, emphasizing his supportive nature.

“He’s truly the person you want to turn to when you’re in need of someone to listen,” shared Chantel Yulina, his girlfriend and dance partner for the past six years.

Comfort Fedke, a choreographer and friend, mentioned that a nurse’s presence during the incident likely saved his life. “Fortunately, someone was there who happened to be a nurse,” she recounted.

Gilliam’s mother, Tseda Graggs-Borden, expressed gratitude, believing that this nurse made a vital difference in their situation. An earlier update on the fundraising page detailed that Gilliam was in critical condition after his cardiac arrest.

“This situation is heartbreaking and overwhelming for our family. The costs for medical care, hospitalization, and recovery are rising quickly as he receives intensive treatment,” a family member shared.

Gilliam graduated from UCLA in 2016 and has made appearances on programs like “Jimmy Kimmel Live” and worked with Tyler Perry Productions. His social media profiles showcase videos of him engaged in dancing, reflecting his passion.

His family and friends have remained by his side since the emergency. One friend even shared a photo on social media, featuring Gilliam displaying impressive footwork.

Support for him from the dance community and beyond has been tremendous. “He has contributed so much to so many, so it’s truly touching to see everyone rallying around him now,” Yulina remarked. “It speaks volumes about the kindness he has shown to others.”

Gilliam’s mother remains optimistic, believing her gentle son will be back on the dance floor soon. “I trust that God’s plan is unfolding. I’m certain he’ll dance with the same passion and lightness once again. I can’t wait for that moment.”
